("New Arrivals Gallery") This entrancing Caucasian rug was created near the wealthy Azerbaijani seaport of Baku, on the shores of the Caspian Sea. Emblematic of Baku weavings, octagonal medallions are tucked within a series of compartments. Within each octagon are spontaneously placed birds and esoteric cruciform designs conveying a vaguely Far Eastern aesthetic, a look easily transmitted to such a bustling trade hub. Ivory bands enclose this space, adorned with several sleek, angular weavers’ combs. In the outer zone of the field, uber-stylized “snowflake” form flowerheads and mythical four-legged creatures stand alongside additional avian attendants, with glittering triangular amulets, tiny diamonds, and elemental florets interspersed here and there. The gentle patina of time accentuates the still vibrant plant-based colors with an inherent sheen. This tremendously totemic, fun-filled piece is in superb condition for its age. Its versatile 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 dimensions allow it to function as a prized part of a collection cache or a festive accent piece to be used around the home.
