(Connoisseur-Caliber)
Rugs from the region of Perpedil, roughly 30 kilometers north of Kuba offer some of the most distinctive Caucasian designs that are very finely woven and known for their often stately appearance counterbalanced by asymmetrical improvisations and sly flashes of color. Vigorous ‘vurma’ or ram’s horn motifs occupy the center, symbolizing power and protection, alternating with exquisite “snowflake” flowers and octagonal insignias. The intervening deep blue ground is populated by legendary avian forms, pinwheel blossoms, and other magical motifs. Throughout, a beautifully integrated color palette has retained its depth and luster after almost 150 years in superb mid-tone hues derived from locally procured dyestuffs. Subtle color-switching enhances the field and a clearly etched Kufic border pattern made all the more striking with a lightly patinated, high-medium woolen pile.
