(High-Collectible)
("The California Collection") This very personal Shirvan rug was likely made for use by the weaver, their family, or close neighbors. It is remarkable for its juxtaposition of naivete and architectural precision of its designs. An elaborate centerpiece stretches the entire length of the field, appearing to compress the horizontal border motifs. Within the sapphire blue octagonal medallion, a ’Star of Wisdom’ is placed in the center of an “animal skin” motif (a visual survival harkening to a time when some scholars believe real hides were used in ancient carpet construction). Various tower-like structures and extensions in a madder red hue are built up from this nucleus, resting upon a filigree thin reticulated pattern across an ivory background. Numerous improvised forms and tiny inclusions can be found throughout as this weaver had great fun expressing themselves artistically to produce a piece that is never boring to see. Two totemic gazelle-like beings stoically observe in the lower corners. Even, medium pile condition at 175 years of age means this rug has always been well cared for and ready for its next steward.
