A favorite of Caucasian rug collectors, this 19th century "Eagle Kazak" (Chelaberd Karabagh) is the most distinguishable from the panoply of Caucasian types for their astonishing 12-tipped sunburst medallion motifs. Every connoisseur who loves Caucasian rugs considers including at least one fine-quality "Eagle" in their collection. This harmoniously composed, nearly 150-year-old piece is extraordinarily preserved with heavier pile overall. Surrounding its three-and-a-half crisply drawn medallions are many tiny geometric forms. They provide a whimsical accent to the majesty of the rug, like a jester in the king's court, exhibiting the style's beloved sense of spontaneity that fell away in early 20th century examples. This incredibly vital rug offers a rich palette highlighted by an unusual potent burgundy red ground and glistening wool.
