To breathtaking visual effect, a rich panoply of zoological and symbolic imagery adorn this mesmerizing rug from an Arab weaver of one of five "Khamseh" tribes that make up this prominent Southern Persian confederacy. Within interlocking medallion chains, opposingly postured chicken fowl (known as 'murghi' working tirelessly to feed its young) vie for precedence amidst a diverse landscape of magical elements scattered across the field, designed to bring good fortune. These include gazelles, sun disks, boteh seeds, latch-hooked jewels, together with Zoroastrian-inspired S-glyphs and, heretofore, an unseen motif, possibly of seafaring vessels complete with canopies and oars. Deeply saturated, luminous hues present bold juxtapositions while preserving an inherent compositional consonance only achievable by a master weaver. Inconceivably, this early tribal rug is in superb condition.
