Late 19th-century Malayer rugs from the village of Mishin, located between the weaving centers of Hamadan and Sarouk, are highly prized as the finest of village weavings, distinguished by their extreme fineness and intricate designs. In this Connoisseur-Caliber Mishin Malayer, a field of generative boteh populate the field, celebrating the importance of this ‘Seed of Life’. Woven entirely from memory, the weaver enjoyed the artistic freedom to revel in the delightful contrast between impeccable symmetry and intriguing asymmetry in the placement of this essential primal motif. Note on the left side, the spacing is very irregular, allowing for a spontaneous filling of the emptiness with small diamonds in various sizes and unfinished botehs. The azure blue highlights are luminate, combined with the brilliant cinnabar red and deep indigo. While the graceful shape of the boteh is derived from formal weaving designs, the placement of stick figure animals in the lower corner spandrals pays homage to the weaver’s tribal heritage. The dramatic ivory main border is filled with a delightfully abstract rendering of flowering blossoms and leafy vines, and artfully frames the deeply harmonious composition.
