Antique Tabriz rugs run the gamut of pattern languages from the most austere and ethereal to “maximalist” portrayals of a sacred natural world. This glorious piece is ascribed to the latter. Within a lush background of fecund floral sprays, three golden fronds are carefully nurtured and grow triumphantly from the opulent, ornamented vase. Look how its curling handles morph into the heads of cranes! Overhead at the very top of the rug's field another crown-like vessel hangs from the vaulted arch by a cord, spilling an offering shower of blossoms into the scene. Engaged with the vertical edge of the field are two stately cypress trees, suggesting that the design is never-ending. Adding to the intrigue are soft cerulean blue roundels in the warm, madder red corner spandrels that are actually portals revealing two firebirds perched on a ledge peering back at the viewer. This luxuriant Persian City rug would be an exquisite showpiece, and its heavy pile condition and luxurious wool would allow it to even comfortably withstand the heavier traffic of an entry hall. And the continual nuances of its complex pattern offers the viewer myriad of new elements to discover over time.
