TEHRAN VASE RUG
4' 5" x 6' 6" (135 x 198cm) Circa 1900
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") Tehran rugs from the turn of the 20th century are at the pinnacle of Persian rug art in this period and prized for the transcendental realism they achieve, their extremely fine weave of high-quality wool, and the workshop-level craftsmanship they exhibit. Here an elegant, petite medallion with large anchor pendants and a massive bouquet of carnations, peonies, and other flowers emerging at the top is poised on the lower part of the midnight blue field. Inside this central medallion is a scene of a town and trees artfully depicted, while other pastoral tableaus are included in cartouches throughout the main border, echoing this theme. Towering floral branches emerging from elaborate vases flank the central figure. In an exciting asymmetry, one fantastically detailed flowering branch hangs over the dramatic central bouquet and supports a prominently displayed exotic perigrin falcon. Arching crimson red corner spandrels with a single tasseled good luck talisman dangling at the top complete the hyper-realistic composition. The extensive color palette is tantalizing with hues of dusty rose, coral, crimson, aqua, brilliant azure blue, rare emerald green, pale pink, antique ivory, and ochre. This superb connoisseur’s piece is well preserved and will make a unique and eye-catching display.
