KURDISH, Northwest Persian
10' 10" x 16' 7" Circa 1910 Price: $24,000
(High-Decorative)
The extremely large- scale geometricized design and the unusually large 11 x 16.5 dimensions of this antique Kurdish carpet are incredibly seldom-encountered, deeply appealing attributes, as are its heavy foundation and ultra-durable condition. Its adventurous field design reveals 13 full and partial circular medallions filled with large open-faced flowers. the petals of which each holds an individually drawn and varying palmette. At the center of each medallion floats a star-shaped blossom, while animals frolic across the field. Also unique is the border patterning built from curling and serrated leaves enclosing pairs of facing palmettes. This oversize captures the Kurdish love of wide palettes of color from butternut to a rare violet referred to as Tyrian purple, buff to pink lavender—all resting on a welcoming carnelian red field!
