(High-Collectible)
("New Arrivals Gallery") Throughout the 19th century, the finest quality Kashan rugs were attributed to the workshop of Mohtasham, known for their inconceivably fine weave and lustrous lamb's wool pile. They are vigorously sought after by connoisseurs of classical Persian weaving. This ambitious and magnificent piece is a particularly rare example that reflects a stylistic influence from the nearby village of Joshegan. A cruciform centerpiece hovers on vivid French blue with loosely diamond-shaped floret clusters. Weeping willows coming in above and below could double as flowing courtyard fountains, also echoed in four corners of the field. On the rarely seen ivory ground of its hypnotic border, a flock of nearly concealed birds feasts on grape bunches that grow from sweeping sapphire vinery. The entire piece shimmers through unfathomably soft wool of the highest quality, its luminosity amplified by the rug's lush, heavier pile.
