ZIEGLER SULTANABAD
9' 0" x 12' 3" (274 x 373cm) Circa 1875
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") In the latter part of the 19th century, the Ziegler company established numerous loom industries in the renowned Ferahan weaving area. Using incredibly silky wool, this famous, innovative style fostered a syncretic, more sophisticated artistic expression than traditional Sultanabad carpets up to that point. In this beautiful, finely woven room-size example, illuminated flowerheads, eccentric palmettes, and feathery fronds bloom along burgeoning vinery. The asymmetrical pattern creates a timeless sense of nature luxuriating in the elaborate commingling of stylized blossoms of many different scales floating together. This style is beloved for its exquisite color-combining, exemplified here by a plethora of exotic hues that dance upon the glowing sunset carnelian red reserve. A gently textured abrash, superb wool quality, and extremely good pile condition contribute to this carpet's timelessness, as it translates easily into a traditional or modern-contemporary setting. In themselves, exquisite are the dancing palmettes and graceful arabesque leaves that embellish the border as they perform the task of containing the melodic flower garden of the field.
