(High-Collectible) ("New Arrivals Gallery") Early Bakshaish carpets are quite rare and widely renowned for their extensive exploration of stylized variations on traditional designs as well as their surprising palettes, making each one from this period a true one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Here, in this 175-year-old Bakshaish art carpet, in an entirely original display, Shah Abbas rosettes are framed within diamonds, crowned with novel flattened rosettes, and then all linked by columns of tiny Diamonds of Strength, creating a transporting design. The subtle shift in tone throughout the camelhair ground, plus the sudden use of deep midnight in some of the secondary rosettes in the upper half, conveys a magical luminosity and sense of depth. The overall earth-toned palette is made more fascinating with a scintillating, very light sky blue in the main border and a range of azure blues in the large diamonds of the field. The spacious arrangement of the columns of geometricized rosettes is breathtaking. Diminutive flowerheads and palmettes in an intriguing range of sizes fill the intervening spaces. The charming addition of beloved horses is a reminder of a world long before technology, in which horses were integral to survival. The innovative pattern, rare earth-toned palette, superb condition at great age, and deeply harmonious composition make this a significant and High-Collectible work of woven folk art.
