This versatile-sized piece came from the famous weaving center of Bijar, where the tradition of double-wefted, heavy wool foundations earned the moniker “Iron Rug of Persia.” This rug presents an open mocha-toned undyed camel’s hair field, creating a sense of depth through exquisitely rendered color striation. At its heart, a glowing carnelian-hued medallion is almost dwarfed by a pair of elaborate pendants, possibly based on pomegranates, with classic faceted palmettes emblazoned on their surface. Careful scrutiny reveals that the beautiful fractured pattern in the central diamond is actually sprouting boteh seeds given a dazzling camouflage. The border suite contains a striking band of sunflowers on a seldom-seen walnut-toned ground, flanked by parallel burnished gold bands that present a fun cubist-style rendition of poppy-like flowers and buds emerging from filigree vinery. Its unblemished condition is remarkable, and its versatile size would be perfect for an entryway, stair landing, or nook with many years of artful application still ahead.
