(High-Collectible)
("New Arrivals Gallery") This more formal example of the much lauded Ferahan aesthetic genius simply checks all the boxes for a handsome, engaging area-size rug. As a paragon of Persian Town weaving, portraying the harmonious interplay between majesty and delicacy in a magnificent way, it is a profoundly moving artwork. Its sophisticated medallion is difficult to categorize in shape, but it is beyond question enchanting in its handling of botanical motifs that are each individualized and unique to this rug. The robust teal green vinery passes through two “loops” in the middle in a wonderfully beguiling three dimensional effect. Orbiting the rich red ochre centerpiece is a variety of flora that appear to tilt and sway above the aged ivory reserve. Inky blue corner spandrels hold bustling flowers that disappear out of frame, tempting the mind to imagine a glowing midnight garden world beyond. A more densely populated, relatively narrow border suite adds an ideal amount of magical aesthetic tension in juxtaposition to the larger-scale designs in the spacious field. The sublime knot-work and handle is tremendously fine, and the extremely durable woolen surface has retained excellent medium pile after over a century and a half.
