(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") This wonderfully idiosyncratic Serab with its undyed camelhair field is a deeply intriguing work crafted over a century ago in Northwest Persian Azerbaijan near Mount Sabalan, where semi-nomadic weavers produced enchanting, stylized rugs. It is an example of their more whimsical design tradition with a pair of diamond-shaped medallions with anchor-style pendants, one of which appears to have been pushed inward by the top edge of the field. Four cartouches containing archaic-looking runes flank the upper medallion. The golden brown undyed camelhair ground of this some 125-year-old mat-sized rug displays subtle abrash, visually rippling the surface like soft sand dunes. Four intrepid heroes make their way across this forboding landscape, dodging floating geometric flowerheads, perhaps in search of their golden fleeced herd. On a lucent sapphire ground, an unusual pattern occupies the main border, fluctuating in size and spacing, with hues of jungle green appearing here and there. Extremely well-constructed with a medium pile, this endearing rug crackles with charm. The two boxes at the top of the field contain incomplete dates, likely because the weaver was illiterate.
