(High-Collectible)
("Featured in our new print catalog") As a deeply compelling artwork destined to continue to increase in rarity over time, the allure of a very early Serapi, such as this carpet with its quiet grandeur and organic movement, is profound. An aged carnelian and dusty rose chromatic coupling set the spell, emanating the warmth of a wizened friend. Together with the parchment-tinted urn-shaped field, its spacious, unadorned surface achieves a visceral sense of openness, beckoning the viewer to come closer or stand within its universe. Creating enrapturing “climates” through translucent colors and generous negative space is this style’s contribution to the Persian geometric weaving tradition. Early Serapi artistry is exemplified by this piece’s panoply of brilliantly drawn, unabashedly spontaneous elemental leaves, fronds, and flower heads connected by ingenious pathways, evoking the movement of tendrils in a garden. The unrestrained, over-scale “Shah Abbas” border pattern is exquisitely folkloric and purposely less loosely drawn than elements in the field to encourage viewers to relax and immerse themselves in its magic. Happily, its condition remains remarkable.
