Antique rugs from the village of Tafresh in the high mountains southwest of Tehran are among the most delightful of handwoven Persian rugs and are very occasionally found. A joyful showcase of flourishing verdancy is enlivened by the irrepressible creativity of its drawing and adept usage of eye-catching sumptuous color. Within a field of luminous golden camelhair tones, a shield medallion employs exotic shades of lilac with guava toned fringe to enclose highly stylized botanical geometric buds and flowers. Fluted amphorae burst with copious florets, sculpted in shades of kiwi, daffodil, and periwinkle. This theme repeats in the spacious border, with pairings of fire flowers and tasseled talismans, bringing tremendous balance to the composition. Along the perimeter, sprouting lazuline boteh seeds represent the next wave of agricultural bounty, perpetuating the cyclical nature of existence in this well-piled piece.
