("One of “65 Best-of-Their-Type Rugs Sold in 2024") Although China may have elevated the beloved Dragon and Phoenix symbols (representative of Yang and Yin) in culture and art millennia ago, the small Persian village of Bakshaish adopted these designs and reinvented them to become one of their most revered visual formats. The concepts of strength and rebirth were ever-present in the day-to-day lives of these semi-pastoral people and expressions of high art in their weavings. This elegantly powerful piece exudes a sublimely harmonious color palette that could brighten any dreary day. The central medallion is attended by four cornflower blue phoenixes enshrouded by highly stylized dragons in a dutiful dance of eternity. The unadorned parchment reserve is outlined by robust serrated edging in soft brick and carnelian red. Just outside, a midnight ground sets up a sparkler effect in a mesmerizing botanical circuitry motif. The deep indigo surround is replete with myriad blossoms and angular vinery, while the corner spandrels continue the Dragon and Phoenix theme on a salmon and golden maize base. The primary border is adorned with a rosette and 'lightning leaf' sequence favored by Bakshaish weavers and reinterpreted in infinite ways in their carpets.
