MALAYER CAMELHAIR
4' 0" x 6' 2" (122 x 188cm) Circa 1875
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") The village of Malayer and the surrounding region had a special fondness for artistically presenting the soft contrast between ivory sheep's wool and the varied shades from camel's fleece. This excellent rug uses this juxtaposition of soft ivory and burnished golden camelhair as the foundation for further artistic expression. A stepped-edge diamond medallion houses a number of boteh (Seeds of Life) that appear to be in the midst of revelry. Similarly shaped pendants extend vertically and are essentially smaller medallions containing the same festive motifs. The inner perimeter of the field is lined with delightful bouquets jutting out at forty-five-degree angles. Throughout the composition, fascinating structures appear to levitate majestically above the painstakingly reticulated background in shades of Pomepeiian red, celadon, jungle greens, and pale violet. The border of this superb condition, heavier-piled rug is a unique variation on the theme with robust, "animated" boteh.
