TURKISH KULA
4' 8" x 5' 5" (142 x 165cm) Late 19th C.
(Connoisseur-Caliber) With an exceptionally intriguing pattern language, this exceedingly early example of the already rarely-seen 19th-century Turkish Kula style preserves a lost artistic heritage. Its brilliantly juxtaposed naturally derived Anatolian colors illuminate the enchanting graphics. A profoundly harmonious organic creativity radiates from a jewel-shaped medallion containing cheery botanical motifs. Exotic fruits hang from the tendrils of a spiky-blossomed plant within the four corners of the dark chocolate field. Mesmerizing coiled motifs spiral upward while glorious crocus flowers line the inner perimeter. The sonorous depth of its exhilarating palette and how the artist employs every hue infuse this joyful rug with a vivacious spirit. Throughout, splashes of ancient Tyrian purple attest to the expense taken to produce this superb weaving. The strikingly brilliant saffron ground of the border elevates the energetic blossoms on bold waves of serrated vinery. Against all odds, this rare cultural treasure has been well handled and has retained very good medium pile over its some 130 years of existence.
