SERAPI
4' 10" x 6' 0" (147 x 183cm) Circa 1875
(High-Collectible) We were elated to discover this aesthetically powerful, consummate-quality Serapi rug in a small private collection we acquired. Area-size Serapi weavings were rarely produced and have become extremely scarce. This serene, slightly abstract version of a classical Serapi pattern of this type married the past and present simultaneously. The multi-layered central flower medallion features a lotus at its core, with gold-encased pendants projecting into the fiery red reserve. Joyfully animated flowering vines encircle the centerpiece. The ivory corner spandrels exhibit fiery, seed-like forms, each differing spontaneously in design and dimensions. A bold traditional border pattern of tumbling winged palmettes is visually visceral due to the juxtaposition of color that makes each shape really pop. Timeless and sophisticated Serapi colors glow with the slight patina of time, sharpening each motif and causing its even, medium-piled surface to glisten.
