ZIEGLER SULTANABAD
9' 8" x 12' 11" (295 x 394cm) Circa 1875
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") This latecomer to Persian styles was enabled by the intellectual property of weavers and designers from nearby Ferahan Sarouk and venture capital from a German company’s access to English connections in Persia. These associations rendered a unique style that offered ingenious, free artistic expression from a tradition in its infancy. A lyrical field pattern leaves the impression of a central medallion via ethereal rust-red grape leaves attached to gossamer vinery surrounding a radial tulip cluster. This centerpiece and adjacent palmette forms are brought slightly off-center for a more engaging sense of movement and alternative perspective, rather than the tedium of absolute vertical symmetry. The graceful curvatures of darkly outlined filigree tendrils support hand-drawn laurel leaves, buds, and florets. Beyond luminous earth and sky colors, this serene carpet is swathed with a glowing golden hue that Jason and his Argonauts would surely admire. Its exceedingly fine condition, combined with these rarely seen neutral and warm tones, is ideal for many interior design projects with larger spaces to fill.
