MELAS
3' 2" x 6' 0" (97 x 183cm) Circa 1850
(High-Collectible) ("New Arrivals Gallery") The dramatic emphasis on borders is one of the defining traits that make earlier Melas rugs instantly recognizable among very old Turkish village art rugs. This design, as seen here in this splendid rug, with a narrow central field surrounded by broad, contrasting borders, evokes a compelling visceral sense of movement and highlights the central motif. A central slender vertical branch with emerging buds forms the axis and is flanked by a series of eight-lobed flowerheads. These blossoms become the thematic element and are echoed in two of the energetic borders. The main border of brilliant vermillion is adorned with repeating diamonds, each radiating florets. Two ivory secondary borders, depicting abundant rows of sprig and flower motifs, add another layer of magical movement. The staccato contrasts when viewing the rug as a whole are positively enchanting. The lively palette radiates hues of deepest burgundy, luminous vermillion, golden flax, rare jade green, and perky highlights of azure and cornflower blues. The charming artistry, unique design, and superb condition at a substantial age make it a rare treat for the connoisseur's eye.
