HERIZ RUNNER
3' 0" x 17' 7" (91 x 536cm) Circa 1900
(High-Decorative) ("New Arrivals Gallery") Heriz carpets reached their peak production for the American market over 100 years ago, and today they remain a stalwart, integral element of fine homes, prized for their ability to transform and establish a distinctive, individual ambiance, as well as for their renowned durability. As this region mainly wove room-sized carpets, runners were seldom woven, making this piece a very exciting art discovery. This fabulously colored Heriz runner is made more singular by the use of the rare deep indigo blue ground instead of the almost universal red. The compelling geometric design, rich in tribal-influenced aesthetics, features a central axis of interconnected medallions that alternate between impressive architectural medallions and petite hooked diamonds. The inventive Heriz weavers adapted the square-on-square medallion, which is nearly always enormous in room-sized rugs, fitted it to runner proportions, and added an ancient tribal motif, the hooked ‘Wheel of Life,’ to create this distinctive and dramatic design. The extraordinarily saturated colors of this circa 1900 Connoiseur-Caliber Heriz runner reflect tribal and village preferences for unabashed primary hues and, also, the unique practice of soaking their finished rugs in the copper-rich waters of Mount Sabalan, which alters the natural vegetal dyes and intensifies the colors, particularly the iconic flaming rust-reds as seen in this piece. The oak-leaf-and-rosette main border, colored a brilliant azure, pops against the rust-red secondary borders and artfully frames the deep indigo field of angular medallions. Highlights in ivory, golden yellow, salmon, and coral give depth to the design, while masterful use of color striations (abrash) throughout lends a spontaneous, human touch.
