KURDISH CAMELHAIR, Northwest Persian
3' 10" x 4' 10" Circa 1875 Price: $5,200
(High-Decorative)
A vital and spontaneous work of tribal weavers, most likely family members, this seldom found area-size camelhair rug immediately had us under its spell. Its charming folkloric character is evident in its asymmetrical placement of the medallion and partial medallion, surrounded by four naively rendered large scale boteh ("Seed of Life" motif.) While the medallions are skillfully executed, derived from traditional motifs, the border designs are entirely playful and free-form, filled with geometric shapes that continually change in both scale and form, probably the work of a young weaver. The festive array of secondary hues and the luminous blonde undyed camelhair come together to enhance its joyful spirit.
