SERAPI
9' 3" x 12' 7" (282 x 384cm) Circa 1875
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") This is a deeply impactful, one-and-a-half-centuries-old Serapi that offers extremely unique artistry that will be sincerely appreciated by connoisseurs of 19th-century village style carpets. No less than four levels of rarefied blue are present, from celadon and breathtaking cerulean in the corners to the medallions soft seafoam and the most profound midnight indigo. The field is open and expansive, with an abundance of ivory taking a very active role in the design, as if a jewel setting holding the intensely striated brick red reserve. Individual floating ornaments are not connected by vinery, which is a unique departure from convention. Even the traditional Shah Abbas border compresses and expands freely, imparting a wonderfully dynamic energy to this relentlessly creative artistic statement.
