This palace-size carpet from the pinnacle of Amritsar workshops from India’s short “Golden Age”, comes this ambitious rendering of the centuries-old formal Garden design that was first created in royal Persian ateliers. This classic layout saw waterways segmenting smaller plots each devoted to a single plant species. Here every four panels, holding differing flora, are enclosed by flowered braces that extend throughout the field, supplementing the early water channels. The grandeur of this theme is magnificently captured here, expressed in a regal palette of sumptuous turquoise, peacock, and cerulean blues offset by rose and violet and many tertiary shades. Fifteen borders ennoble this majestic piece, the wide main framing revealing a secondary family of flowering motifs not featured in the field.
