This small room-size 19th century Serapi carpet inhabits the formal end of this style’s panoply of interpretations of their medallion design. Here in the rose, coral, and ivory grand flourishes in both the medallion and border meander are coupled with quite delicate flowers and vinery, reminiscent in their lifelike drawing of Ferahan and Mohtasham Kashan. Known for their evocative choice of color, this Serapi’s secondary color palette of sage and moss green, multiple light blues, a golden sand color sprinkled throughout the field and supporting the main palmette border creates a gracious chromatic depth. Notable asymmetry in the medallion placement that is balanced by the deeper upper spandrels add an aliveness to the artistry that Serapis celebrate.
