Kurdish rugs are known for being the anthesis of somber. Even as the antique rug-making tradition was winding down at the turn of the 20th century and commercial influences dictated designs and expenditures of energy, Kurdish rugs still offered spirited skillful tribal art. This colorful runner with its carnelian main tone utilizes small amounts of naturally-dyed aubergine and walnut shades to provide emphasis and corn silk yellow and terracotta for soft contrasts. An axis of hooked medallions ascends the field, each one individually colored while the diagonally striped main border shifts from tone to tone without a repetition.
