The city of Kirman since Safavid times has justifiably enjoyed a reputation for carpets of extraordinary beauty and refinement. This ecstatic example based in a profound shade of rose red exhibits a symphonic array of sumptuous secondary hues of lilac, ruby, celadon, Tuscan gold, peacock and arctic blue to only name a few! Numerous diffused four square ‘medallions’ are nestled within ornate floral renderings that fill every space, evoking the City weaving tradition’s aesthetic of splendor meant to elicit the state of awe in the viewer. An extremely fine weave and closely shorn pile unveil each of the garlands, bouquets and other lush botanical details in its resplendent visual feast. The expertly shifted balance of colors to an ivory based main border, hosting rose cartouches, achieves a subtle demarcation from the field. Its less often produced oversize dimensions makes this connoisseur’s court carpet particularly special.
