("New Arrivals Gallery") 19th-century Kuba rugs with the exuberant ‘Snowflake’ pattern are quite rarely seen and fervently sought after by collectors. Those with glowing golden camelhair pile are even more elusive and exceptional, particularly when in the heavier pile condition of this mesmerizing piece. The namesake allover motifs fall in a fluently unhurried manner; each appears to advance and recede as their blazing red, mellow sapphire, and ivory values are explored. Mildly asymmetrical placement of the idiosyncratic tribal inclusions between each abstract floating blossom adds another layer of fascination. Notice how the inner border shifts from simple rosettes to fanlike carnations on the vine. An artfully kinetic compression occurs at the top where a snowflake blossom and two ‘ashik’ rosettes become mildly distorted as if going through a liminal moment as they slowly slip out of view beyond the triple border suite.
