One of the many things that connoisseurs admire about earlier 19th century Bakshaish carpets is no two are at all alike. This expressive, unusually geometric room-size carpet is no exception, skillfully intertwining dragon and diamond themes throughout its patterning. Here the dragon as the unseen benevolent force ruling creation is merely suggested by evoking the “scales” covering its body in the drawing of leaf forms in this piece. These patterns appearing in both the medallion and border are meant to be a harbinger of benevolence. This carpet’s originally-shaped medallion with its enigmatic inner ornament is magical, more so framed by the striated, carnelian diamond-shaped reserve. Upon the softly abrashed marine blue field, effervescent blossoming vinery, tiny florets, and Wheel of Life symbols depict Nature’s fulsome energy, while the meandering vinery in the main border features diamonds with inner crosses that is an age-old symbol.
