HERIZ GARDEN OF PARADISE, Northwest Persian
9' 10" x 11' 10" Late 19th Century Price: $25,000
(Connoisseur-Caliber)
("New Arrivals Gallery") Presenting an arboreal celebration, this fascinating antique Heriz room-size carpet depicts an entrancing rendition of the beloved “Garden of Paradise” field pattern set against a lapis blue base. Its luminous color palette and mesmerizing design create an awe-inspiring visual effect. A triad of lushly branching golden staves provides a protective canopy for numerous conifers and willow trees in an orderly intermingling, yielding stylized multi-colored cultivars. In a radically fresh interpretation of the classic Shah Abbas border pattern, a filigree of glowing vinery connects crest-like palmettes, each containing the ancient tribal ‘ashik’ gul. Note how the weavers creating the borders “turned” each corner, exhibiting the spontaneous decision making and execution for which these village rugs are esteemed. Happily, this glorious 130-140-year-old carpet is in superb condition for even a heavily trafficked area.
