Packed with cosmological delights, this folkloric, yet highly refined, Kuba rug was created by a very accomplished weaver, seamlessly introducing a wide range of designs, even from neighboring Shirvan. The central column of motifs replicate a Bidjov Shirvan construction, but the top and bottom medallions hold Kuba’s Ordutch Konagend grill-like motifs; the rest of the extemporaneously drawn field and border designs are likewise part of Kuba’s lexicon. Mythical peacocks, antelopes and horses, each with distinct personalities vie for space; tasseled talismans and enigmatic anchor devices abound. Inventive, larger-than-life boteh seeds are supercharged with animistic energy while their cousins circumambulate the innermost golden border. The absolutely charming ambiance and humorous portrayal that this rug projects belies the astonishing skill of its anonymous weaver.
