Late 19th Century

This tantalizing, quite well-preserved late 19th-century carpet is particularly detectable, as Serab camelhair rugs are rarely found in small room-size dimensions. Varying tones of undyed camelhair combine to create an intricate tone-on-tone lattice with striking visual effect. The indigo hexagonal medallion encloses an eye-catching golden diamond, masque-like palmettes, rosettes skillfully inserted into the pairs of Herati assemblages. Richly prized leaf green harmonizes with bronze, coral, and cornflower. Two tree-form vertical pendants are reciprocated with four others extruding into the sandy expanse. Saturated madder red double-peaked panels at each end of the field contain even more innovative asymmetric uses of these elemental motifs. Look closely to find a spontaneously placed lone fowl keeping company with an errant scarab and spouted teapot. An artfully staccato floral design fills the primary border.
