The Luris were part of the mosaic of Southern Persian tribes that maintained a fiercely independent spirit in the face of dominant political forces. This graphic, nearly room-size rug achieves effortless compositional cohesion through its use of an innovative technique that yields the illusion of latticework. The field’s diamond medallions, fringed with the hooked dragon motif, mysteriously venture beyond the diversified border suite into infinity. Its color palette is simply bedazzling in an array of cheerful tones astutely combined in a highly successful study of intuitive tribal color theory. Within each is the Luri’s version of the eponymous ‘Memling’ gul (flower), made famous in 15th-century oil paintings by Hans Memling. Outstanding condition with intact skirting at the top further elevate this authentic nomadic rug.
