With an exuberant modern art aesthetic, this captivating Kuba weaving evokes an immediate sense of wonder. A kaleidoscopic, polychrome latticework is filled by diamond-headed ’sprig and flower’ motifs mesmerically drawn in five essential types. Only an adroit, nimble-minded weaver could improvise the rows of flowers and their outlining in this way, creating numerous compelling variations. The precision even in the tiniest elements, including recurrent 8-pointed stars, crosses, triangular tasseled talismans, and dragon motifs, invites the eye time and again to study this enthralling tribal rug's mysteries. Shrewdly combined colors gambol and interplay to glittering effect. Its series of borders feature out-of-the-ordinary themes, with intentional irregularities and asymmetries. Of particular interest in the left-hand vertical ivory main border are the star-within-octagon devices that irreverently ‘continue' beyond the frame.
