Advanced use of symmetry elevates this irresistibly charming area-size Serapi rug, conceived in northwest Persia in the latter part of the 19th century. This ruggedly handsome piece possesses an exceptionally bold presence and makes a memorable artistic statement. The medallion consists of a tightly constructed assemblage of dazzlingly hued abstract floral devices surrounding a lotus centerpiece set against a fathomless midnight sky ground. Deconstructed botanical vinery and artful, jewel-toned flowerheads are arranged throughout the deep garnet red reserve and aged ivory corner spandrels, each drawn with tremendous creativity. The palette is bold and sumptuous as a driving impulse in the design resulting in a stirring symphony of color. Area-size dimensions are much more seldom found than their room-size counterparts, and as an added bonus, this piece also has primarily heavier pile allowing it to be placed virtually anywhere around the home. It would be an ideal statement for any small space where a nearly square weaving would provide the perfect touch.
