Upon an evocatively rippled strawberry field, the 17th century allover repeating Harshang pattern, only occasionally seen in Bakshaish carpets, mesmerizes with its faithful rendition of this compelling and complex early rug design. Instinctively, seasoned Bakshaish weavers bring their particular brand of magic to this large room-size carpet, improving it with their consummate skill at color combination and sensitive spacing as well as their command of the art of scale. Note the artistically daring use of rare teal for a single palmette near the center! Introducing another favorite tribally-inspired technique are golden fringed palmettes with dark outlines found nowhere else in the composition, emerging from below. They suggest the pattern is moving from beyond the beautifully radiant blue borders. As an art form, only carpet weaving allows us to live on inspired pieces such as this, and the effect can be thrilling.
