One of the preeminent 19th-century styles, superb-quality 19th century Ferahan Sarouks today are extremely hard to find, let alone at 145 to 170 years, such as this exquisite room-size carpet. This invigorating piece excels in the expressiveness of its pattern, seen in the dervish dancelike movement of luxuriant golden vinery in the majestic outer medallion that envelops a stunning 8-petalled centerpiece. Delectable shades of jungle green and a rarely seen pistachio, most prominent in the central octogram and opulent corner spandrels, bring additional vitality to the sophisticated yet ebullient color palette. An engaging border treatment is a celebration of color and form where elaborate vine-connected palmettes appear almost alive and deftly applied color shifts abound. Against the odds, this never-to-be-repeated regal weaving remains in very good floor-worthy condition despite its venerable age.
