Infused with stirring, extremely subtle gradations of evocative abrash, this exciting open field Bakshaish reveals the visionary artistic splendor of its 19th-century mountain village heritage. Except for a crisply drawn stepped edge medallion and pendant suite filled with sparkling flowers, the deliberately unadorned field focuses the attention on its rippled watercolor-like striations of myriad carnelian tonalities produced by consummately skillful natural dyeing techniques. The creatively patterned network of blossoms continues in the expansive aqueous spandrels. By contrast, the repetition of the totemic sun motif of the border progression brilliantly balances the workings of the impactful center and continues the carpet’s elemental ambiance. Its wool quality is first-rate, which lends a shimmering, tactile quality to the surface.
