Late 19th Century

This fascinatingly unique Persian Serapi rug offers a marvelously inventive, chiseled field design and a masterfully dyed, richly saturated color palette. Its village weaver was not only inspired by the illumined colors and rigorous beauty of the surrounding Elburz Mountains but also cleverly integrated transmogrified design influences from neighboring Karaja and Bakshaish. Pairs of star medallions in sand and ivory hues alternate with others reminiscent of grand pagoda temples encased in emerald, their curling appendages representing the Celestial Dragon. The smaller scale border suite introduces further proportional layering adding tremendous visual interest. Only very few area-size rugs were woven in the 19th century from this district, and as such, they have become incredibly scarce. Happily, this dynamic example is in superb condition for active floor use.
