A modern art aesthetic and a visual feast of vivid color tones distinguish this exceptional Shirvan rug. Three cruciform shield medallions that appear chiseled to exactitude occupy the central axis offering variations on a compelling graphic theme. Beyond the esoteric rectangular emblems, latch hook Wheels of Life, and solar roundels, triangular birds in profile are stamped throughout the field. Some are hitching a ride on golden mythical chimeric beasts that combine attributes of two or more animals. Glowing ivory canines and sheep outlined in scarlet can be found near the lower shield. In a carefully graduated range of scale, all of the motifs emerge brilliantly from the canvas of the deep Caspian blue ground like a master painting. Filled with totemic magic, the condition of this piece is superb. Its heavy pile of top-grade karakul wool makes it as durable as it is artfully pleasing.
