A wholly unique design sets this over 150-year-old Serapi apart from all others, repeating elongated hexagonal forms in differing sizes to fill a majestic, overscale medallion, also six-sided. Woven in the Heriz area about 15 miles from the cluster of villages that created the Bakshaish tradition, this early piece offers a level of creative inspiration akin to their legendary neighbor. Comparing left and right details reveals many playful irregularities, while the density of stylized floral elements in the top and bottom spandrels is brilliantly configured. Distinguished by generous expanses of ivory, this avante garde carpet's harmonious color palette presents softened copper tones mingling with iridescent blues, supported by artichoke greens, delicate champagne pink, and flax. The understated border suite continues the tribal drawing of the field. Its superb condition creates the potential for great diversity of display.
