("The California Collection") This melodic small room-size carpet exemplifies the Ferahan tradition's masterfully fluent, uncanny ability to create inventive transformative patterning. The awe-inspiring complex beauty of the repeating field design, based on the ancient “keyhole” motif, is achieved by a dexterously nuanced technique of expansion and compression of negative space. Within this undulous network a variety of kaleidoscopic botanical creations take the stage in a staggering variety of shapes and sizes. Its glorious colors are carefully rendered for depth and harmony with the entire palette. Luminous emerald and fern greens, cerulean, lemon, citrine, pumpkin, jasper, ochre reds, and powder blue successfully coalesce upon a highly sought-after ivory ground, inviting the viewer to become transfixed with admiration and fascination. With its surrealistic palmettes and floret clusters etched like stained glass, the thrillingly kinetic main border's startling beauty gracefully frames the brilliant interior. Theses stylings might be considered at a transitional stage as the Ferahan Sarouk style accelerated in popularity in the latter half of the 19th century. It is in extremely good floor condition at some 170 years of age.
