Ennobled by the time-softened patina gained for over 1-1/2 centuries, this incredibly handsome Kuba in fabulous condition offers a stunning color palette and visceral design language. An admirable ancestral pattern of fiery latticework often contains elemental “sprig and flower” motifs. Here, that more simplistic form transmogrifies into “Star of Wisdom” and diamond chessboard flowerheads, Calder-like geometric assemblages, and mini floral clusters in different stages of movement and transition. Deep resonant hues work in concert to create a dynamic palette of memorable 19th-century colors that include ochre, Bordeaux reds, and pale lemon yellow. Each glitters and glows as though light were passing through jewels. The two curious characters in the upper right corner indicate the rug was likely woven by a non-literate artist who likely noted date cartouches in other rugs she encountered and believed they were designs.
