Late 19th Century
(Connoisseur-Caliber)
19th-century nomadic and village weavers in northwest Persia produced some of the most creatively diverse and free-thinking artistry that exudes both rustic charm and universal appeal. This enchanting rug is a joy-inducing one-off supercharged with spontaneity and wonderfully totemic indulgences. An ivory ground features an allover pattern of boteh “Seeds of Life” in krater-form vases that harbor sprouts awaiting germination. The playful display appears to blaze like colorful flashbulbs in an ever-changing sequence. Floating within this matrix are tiny ethereal pomegranates, foxes, murghi fowl, ibexes, and a lone figure in a striped tunic that seems to be enthralled by their surroundings. Delightfully free-drawn renditions of the latch-hooked “Wheel of Life” circumambulate the field in a firebrick red border, symbols of the cyclical fortunes of humanity. In the vertical bands they seem to stretch away from one another, allowing more space to admire the engaging abrash color striations now more easily seen. Happily, its high medium pile condition allows this unusual 5x10 piece to be displayed even in moderately trafficked areas of the home.
