Bakshaish rugs are consistently the most revered of Persian village styles, known for their risk-taking artistic turns. This nearly 150-year-old piececcarries on the tradition of orderly yet casual spontaneity through its signature freehand approach to naturally inspired motifs. Nested within the serrated confines of a sand-hued reserve, a shield-like centerpiece is adorned with nine stylized poppy blossoms. The multifaceted arrangement of wonderfully pixellated designs in the surround is seamlessly fluid, with individual details expressed with slight spontaneously rendered differences. Flashy boteh (Seeds of Life) are interconnected with “digitalized” blossoms by luminous coral vinery. Expert handling of the harmoniously appealing palette of craft-dyed earthy colors makes a difficult-to-master job look effortless. Enhanced by a slight patina that sets this piece aglow, this folk art rug is made all the more intriguing with its seldom-found 3x4 size and superb overall condition.
