A rug like this is of tremendous interest to connoisseurs of the legendary Qashqai weavers and Persian tribal works as a whole, as pieces in such unexpected condition at substantial age have virtually disappeared from the market. This “Column Rug” amply possesses many key elements that seasoned collectors gravitate towards, including great uniqueness of design, nomadic colors from naturally sourced ingredients, superlative craftsmanship, and a timeless level of beauty. Two reticulated columns are engaged with the length of the rich carnelian field, with elaborate Persian tile patterns adorning the bases and capitals. On delicately balanced pedestals, heart-shaped alabaster vases mirror each other across a central St. Andrew’s cross of rosettes. While appearing symmetrical at first, it only takes a brief second glance to identify innumerable delightful design variations between the profusion of stylized blossoms above and below in this ingenious small room-size rug. Difficult-to-achieve hues of potent yellow ochre and serene sage green were precious to the Qashqai and are sparingly used, with the rare green most prominent within the border. Nearly full pile condition completes to great allure of distinctive, highly successful weaving.
