The village of Karachov in the towering Major Caucasus Range has given its name to a sub-group of Kazak rugs with bold, majestic designs handed down over the generations of local weaving families. This nearly 170-year-old Caucasian Karachov Kazak, with its signature bold, crisply drawn central rectangle with ivory octagon and star-studded spandrels, is a powerful representative of this famed type. The juxtaposition of the bold medallion and painstakingly intricate checkered surround is particularly enchanting and showcases the nimble skills of the weaver. A soothing spaciousness reigns, offering a few archetypal geometric motifs, such as Stars of Wisdom, double ram's horns, and archaic symbols lining the horizontal edges of the richly saturated crimson field. Every luscious hue shimmers from lustrous mountain wool and expert dye work. A particularly sparkling denim blue ground creates lift off for a strikingly chiseled "leaf and chalice" border sequence. Its heavier pile sen condition indicates this treasure was always cherished as a woven treasure.
